Quarry Reopening
Two dormant Tarmac quarries are being reopened for a major Aggregate Products contract. The quarries in Dinas and Penwyllt, Wales, both closed in 1996 but are being reopened for the rest of this year to help Western Areas other aggregate outlets satisfy demand.
The restarts will help Aggregate Products deliver up to one million tonnes of bedding sand for a 325-kilometre gas pipeline running from Milford Haven in Pembrokeshire to Gloucester.
Anthony Morgan, Western Areas operation director, said: "The pipeline project is the largest scheme running in South Wales at present, and we are keen to ensure that Tarmac teams supply the vast majority of materials to the project."
White Horse Contractors, a major customer of Tarmac Topsport have also secured a contract to provide drainage protection to the pipeline.
Moving beyond sports and leisure supplies, Topsport is diving into the land drainage market to support its customer. Drainage aggregate from the Tarmac division is being used for a protective drain running alongside a 107-kilometre stretch of the gas pipeline from Brecon, mid-Wales, to Tirley in Gloucestershire.
John Halfpenny, Topsport general manager, said: "We are delighted to be involved in the project and pleased that our relationship with White Horse has assisted in securing this work."
