What are the challenges for contractors and house builders?
The law on environmental issues is constantly evolving to encourage sites to become more environmentally friendly. Some of the key challenges facing contractors and developers are:
Site Waste Management Plans
All projects over 250,000 pounds will need to implement Site Waste Management Plans from April 2008. This will encourage the segregation of waste and require sites to supply audit trails for all waste. This could possibly mean up to 6-7 skips on site, which will limit the room available. Sub-contractors will have a duty of care and be responsible for the waste they generate.
The Landfill Directive
The Landfill Directive and other Government guidelines has been brought about to regulate the types of waste that can be sent to landfill and sets pre-treatment targets. Key challenges include
- No landfill for site waste by 2012.
- Government target zero site waste by 2020.
- Landfill tax is increasing.
Code for Sustainable Homes
The Code for Sustainable Homes will be mandatory for al house builders from April 2008, and includes site waste as a method for achieving additional points.
Health and Safety Guidelines
Reducing hazards on site, and meeting Health and Safety guidelines.
The Take Back Scheme is an ideal solution to all of these guidelines and has many additional benefits. A Take Back Scheme factsheet and other materials are available from our literature page. Alternatively, for further information email takebackscheme@tarmac.co.uk
