How TermoDeck works

How TermoDeck works

TermoDeck is a fan-assisted heating, cooling and ventilating system. It uses the high thermal mass of structural, hollowcore slabs to warm or cool fresh air before it's distributed into the room spaces of the building.

Using the high thermal mass of hollowcore concrete slabs, the TermoDeck system warms or cools fresh air before it's distributed into the room spaces of a building. When correctly designed, the system can maintain comfortable and stable temperatures within a building over the course of a day.

Controlled by the building management system, supply of air passes through the hollow cores very slowly, giving plenty of time for passive heat exchange between the air and the concrete hollowcore slabs.

The exposed concrete releases heat to, or absorbs heat from, the air passing through it. So by the time the air enters the room it is the ideal temperature for occupant satisfaction.  See other Benefits of TermoDeck and find out what the 7 steps to a TermoDeck building are.

Thermal mass helps to both cool a building in the summer and keep it warm in winter:

Thermal mass during summer nightsSummer nights

At night, the air supply fans bring the cool outdoor air into the hollowcore slabs, lowering the temperature of the building. This is known as free night cooling.

Thermal mass during summer daysSummer days

During the day, warm air that enters the building is cooled as it passes through the hollowcore slabs. The high thermal mass of the exposed ceiling soffit also absorbs internal heat gains generated from lighting, equipment, people and re-radiated solar gains.

Thermal mass during winter daysWinter days

The heat stored by the thermal mass of the hollowcore slabs warms the fresh air from a cold winters day. Extra heat top-up may be provided by a heater unit only where necessary.

During the night, the system is dampered shut. The stored heat is distributed and gradually released to the internal spaces. In a lightweight building the temperature
will fall more rapidly.
