Met Office Exeter

Client: Met Office
Architect: Broadway Malyan
Contractor: Costain-Skanska
Consultant: Zisman Bowyer & Partners
Project value: 80 Million Pounds
Completed: 2003

This move for the Met Office was inevitable.  Its forty year old Bracknell headquarters was costly to maintain and ill equipped to house today's modern IT Infrastucture. Servicing the new headquarters was always going to be challenging. The design team agreed that a mixed mode ventilation system with TermoDeck was the best design proposal.

An array of linked 3-storey buildings built around a meandering atrium space, provide IT accommodation for technical staff, creating medium to high cooling loads. Each floor has individual control over heating
and cooling coils. Triple glazing with mid-pane blinds, a very airtight envelope and a displacement
ventilation system all provide a solid basis for this award winning TermoDeck building.

As soon as this building was completed, ambient temperatures that were well in excess of those modelled during its design tested it, but conditions in the building were reported to be comfortable.
