Jubilee Library Brighton
Client: Brighton & Hove City Council
Architect: Bennetts Associates
Contractor: Llewellyn
Consultant: Fulcrum
Project value: 45 Million Pounds
Completed: 2004
The Brighton Jubilee Library is a 45 million pound development that consists of three floors of office accommodation, reading areas and computer rooms, all surrounding the two-storey library hall.
The TermoDeck system works by using fresh air, rather then recycled air that is often found in air-conditioning systems. The system operates by passing air through precast hollowcore concrete slabs that form the floors and ceiling of the building. During the summer month's fresh air is supplied through the TermoDeck planks and is drawn into the main library hall and exhausted through the rooftop wind towers. Night time purging pre cools the slabs and exposed structure.
A major benefit of the TermoDeck system is the controlled ventilation through the hollowcore concrete slabs means that the users of the building also benefit from the constant source of fresh, filtered air. In addition carbon dioxide levels are significantly reduced, helping to provide a long-term sustainable development. The application of TermoDeck also helps users to stay alert for long periods of time, as well as creating a comfortable working environment throughout the year. The Brighton library has won prestigious awards such as the Building Services Major Project of the year 2005, Prime Ministers Better Public Building, and the South East England RIBA Awards.
