Five-star status and responsible sourcing
In 2011, we became the first company in our industry to secure the new five-star rating under the Achilles BuildingConfidence scheme. The initiative pre-qualifies and certifies suppliers in the UK construction industry. Only suppliers who fully comply with the BuildingConfidence scheme and have zero non-conformities raised at audit for two or more years in a row are eligible for this award.
Achilles BuildingConfidence is an independent certification scheme that makes it easier and cheaper for customers to evaluate their suppliers’ sustainability performance. BuildingConfidence assesses every aspect of our operations: supply chain management, health and safety, transport, responsible sourcing, employee development and environmental performance. Gaining the new five-star score confirms our strong commitment to improving our sustainable practices.
Using Achilles BuildingConfidence offers our customers transparency and robust third-party auditing, helping them to manage their supply chain risk and understand suppliers’ sustainability performance. Over the next few years, we will encourage our suppliers to achieve the BuildingConfidence standard.
Director of construction at Achilles Philip Foster said: “We congratulate Tarmac on being the first in its industry to achieve the five-star rating, an achievement we expect only the top 5% of accredited companies to attain. Tarmac is also demonstrating clear leadership as a council member of BuildingConfidence, and seeking to drive the same standards of excellence across its supply chain.”
We have also reached another milestone in responsible sourcing, by becoming the first lime manufacturer in the world to achieve BES 6001 certification. We now have a BES 6001 ‘VERY GOOD’ rating across our entire product range including all the aggregates, ready mixed concrete, asphalt, lime and cement products from any of our sites in the UK.
The BES 6001 certification means we source materials and manufacture construction products in a responsible manner. The standard defines how to manage environmental and social impacts across the supply chain in a responsible way, from extraction to production as well as transportation to customers. Customers can also boost their own sustainability credentials by using Tarmac products, as BES 6001 scores highly against schemes like BREEAM, the Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) and CEEQUAL.
Director of sustainability at Tarmac, Dr Martyn Kenny, said: “These prestigious ratings for responsible sourcing provide further assurance to our customers of our performance on sustainability, health and safety, and responsible sourcing.”
