Sustainable Products

The materials and products that Tarmac makes are important to us all. They support so many elements of our daily lives and the wider UK economy. Because they are so extensively used, it's important that they are manufactured and supplied sustainably, and that they deliver optimum in-use sustainability performance. Our ethos ensures that our business is ethical and sustainable and that we can help our customers meet their own sustainability challenges.

Tarmac’s products are all around us: in our houses, schools, workplaces and hospitals, as well as our roads, railways and wind farms. They are also used in many other ways that perhaps aren’t obvious, but which are nevertheless important – such as in food manufacturing, water treatment, steel production and making pharmaceuticals, as well as many other industrial and environmental applications.

Why does it matter?

Tarmac’s materials and products are used extensively, and while the things they go into creating – buildings, infrastructure and manufacturing processes – bring many positive benefits, they also have impacts. By understanding these benefits and impacts across the whole product life cycle, we can actively improve the sustainability of our products and the applications they’re used in.

This approach enables us and wider society to tackle important challenges like changes in our climate, depletion of finite resources and energy security. It also helps us to support our customers in meeting the growing number of targets and regulatory requirements that exist to help manage these issues.

What is Tarmac doing?

We take a whole-life approach to the sustainability of our products, which enables us to continually improve their performance. This is done by looking at our processes from ‘cradle to grave’ – from extracting the raw materials, through to manufacturing, transport and in-use performance, as well as final recycling or disposal at the end of their design life.

We focus on providing products and solutions that are responsibly sourced, deliver whole-life carbon benefits, use finite resources more efficiently, generate less waste, are longer lasting and offer value for money. We give our customers transparent information to help them choose the best product or service for their needs. This comprehensive approach means that customers trust the quality of our products and rely on our technical expertise to help them deliver on their sustainability challenges.
