Trade associations and industry initiatives

We believe that industry collaboration is crucial to ensuring that best practice is applied across all companies, and that new industry standards are realistic and support our collective goals.

Our actions

Sustainability

Tarmac, along with other major companies in the UK concrete industry, was a founder member of the UK’s Sustainable Concrete Forum in 2008. The forum unites companies and tions working in sustainable construction and promotes continual improvement, measurement and reporting of sustainability performance data for the sector. In 2011, we have played an active role in the development of a new concrete industry strategy and commitments that will be launched in 2012.

We play an active role within the Mineral Products Association (MPA), by contributing to policy discussions, and our data forms an integral part of the MPA Sustainable Development Report, updated each year.

Tarmac also supports the Cement Sustainability Initiative (CSI), run by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development. The project involves 24 international cement producers who jointly make one third of the world’s cement. Our commitments include: developing a climate change mitigation strategy; responsible use of fuels and raw materials; employee health and safety; emissions reductions; reducing local impacts on land and communities; and reporting and communicating progress by providing performance data to the CSI each year.

In 2005, Tarmac joined other Mineral Products Association members in a voluntary initiative described in the UK Environment Agency’s Cement Sector Plan. The plan set ambitious environmental targets for the UK cement industry to meet, exceeding regulatory requirements. In 2011, it was announced that the cement industry had surpassed these challenging five-year targets, with significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions including NOx (nitrogen oxides), SO2 (sulfur dioxide) and CO2 (carbon dioxide). Further targets have been developed for 2015.

Tarmac’s leadership position in these initiatives helps us to shape future sustainability legislation that affects the construction sector; and to secure the best possible results for our business and our customers.
