Our suppliers
We work with suppliers to embed sustainability, safety and responsible business practices. This ensures that we maximise the positive social, environmental and economic benefits within our supply chain. We strive to act fairly and honestly when working with existing and potential suppliers.
Our actions
Health and safety
Health and safety is a key principle for Tarmac. This applies to our employees and contractors, and also our suppliers, who we expect to achieve the same high standards. We set out stringent requirements for this in our procurement process, and these apply across every part of our business and every type of supplier.
Responsible sourcing
Customers can have confidence that all Tarmac’s products are certified as ‘VERY GOOD’ against the BES 6001 Framework for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products. This means that 100% of our products are responsibly sourced. We are proud of this achievement and continue to ensure that high standards are embedded within every part of our business.

Achilles BuildingConfidence
In 2011, we secured a five-star rating in the Achilles BuildingConfidence scheme, in addition to our existing BuildingConfidence certification. This recognises our consistent and robust approach to delivering effective and transparent supply chain management. As well as holding the BuildingConfidence certification, Tarmac is also a member of the scheme’s governing council – the body that drives the scheme forward and encourages other suppliers to sign up to the scheme. We are currently rolling out BuildingConfidence through our own supply chain partners, and we believe that it is an important way of demonstrating transparency and de-risking the supply chain for our customers.
Values
We value all our supplier relationships, treating current and potential suppliers equally. When doing business with our suppliers, we always act fairly and honestly to ensure the procurement process is ethical and transparent. We comply with competition law and Anglo American’s Rules of Business through an effective strategy that includes making employees fully aware of its implications. We also train our employees in anti-corruption and business integrity measures, to meet the new requirements of the UK Bribery Act 2010. This is an important issue both for Tarmac and our parent company, Anglo American.
Tarmac Speak Up scheme
Our integrity and trust underpins everything we do. To ensure we act in a fair and honest way, and that people can flag up any concerns, we provide a Speak Up scheme. The confidential service allows suppliers and employees to share any concerns about our professional conduct or procurement process. Anyone using Speak Up has confidence that it is confidential and that we will handle their complaint professionally to eliminate any malpractice.
Efficient supply chain
As a key part of our Strategy Supply Management (SSM) programme, we are improving our supply chain efficiency by working with a smaller number of suppliers. This helps us ensure that we are working with trusted companies that share our beliefs and are committed to supporting us in delivering our goals. We set out clear sustainability expectations for our supply chain and communicate these. Engaging with fewer suppliers means that our sustainable procurement needs are met; and we track performance against goals to report progress in a transparent way. We will continue to develop our supply chain with the commitment to BuildingConfidence certification.
