We have developed an extensive network of external partners and harness their knowledge to achieve our sustainability goals, protect the environment and support communities.
We work with many non-governmental organisations including:
- The Wildlife Trusts

Our actions
Encouraging biodiversity
We take a leading approach to managing and enhancing biodiversity at our UK sites. This includes working with independent ecologists to draw up our site-specific Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs), as well as partnering with a range of specialist NGOs. We’ve shown clear commitment by becoming the first quarrying company in the UK to have BAPs at every active site. We hold The Wildlife Trusts’ Biodiversity Benchmark at a number of sites – in fact, Tarmac holds around 67% of all Benchmarks awarded by The Wildlife Trusts in our sector. Restoring quarries is also an important part of our biodiversity efforts. In 2011, we gave around 23 hectares of Broadoak Nature Reserve to the North Wildlife Trust (NWT), to celebrate their 40th anniversary. We will continue to offer active support to the NWT, who now manages the site.

External expertise
To help us achieve our biodiversity, community and environmental goals, we work closely with external NGO partners. In 2011, our Bellmoor and Lound Estate in Nottinghamshire won the Mineral Products Association’s Cooper-Heyman Cup. This prestigious award is the highest honour given for quarry restoration, marking the return of 600 hectares of land to farmland and woodland. Our achievements at the site include the lottery-funded Idle Valley Rural Learning Centre, operated by North Nottinghamshire College, where the North Wildlife Trust runs a variety of community programmes.
