Our strategy
Tarmac is committed to managing land and natural resources in a sustainable and responsible way. We take action to protect the environment, while also reducing waste and increasing our use of recycled materials.
Our approach to managing natural resources & the environment focuses on:
Environmental protection
Our efforts to protect the environment are particularly focused on the following key areas:
This means we aim to:
- meet and, where possible, exceed applicable legal requirements, regulations and standards relating to environmental protection in the country of operation
- identify, assess and manage environmental risk
- record, report, investigate and take action to address environmental incidents
- improve the environmental standards of the sectors in which we operate
- enhance environmental awareness of employees through training
- encourage the adoption of sound environmental principles among contractors, suppliers and customers
- make a positive contribution to biodiversity by active stewardship of land using Biodiversity Action Plans
- contribute to culture and heritage through archaeological investigation and protection.
Efficient use of natural resources
We are committed to using natural resources responsibly and efficiently, an approach which is informed by the UK Government’s Strategy for Sustainable Construction and wider minerals policies. We focus our efforts on three key areas:
Our approach involves:
- using natural resources efficiently and sustainably
- minimising waste and setting improvement targets for cutting the amount of waste sent to licensed disposal
- promoting recycling by processing construction, demolition and excavation waste into high-quality recycled aggregates
- proactively identifying opportunities to use recycled aggregates or secondary aggregates in our products or as fuels for our operations
- measuring and reducing potable water consumption and efficiently managing abstracted water.
