Climate change
Climate change
Climate change is one of the most pressing issue society faces today. Tarmac is proactively responding to the challenges of climate change in a number of ways. We are managing our own carbon footprint, developing lower carbon, energy-efficient solutions and sustainable products, and helping our customers, suppliers and employees do the same.
So why does climate change matter to us?
Many scientists predict that it will result in more extreme weather conditions, higher global temperatures, increased risk of flooding, heat waves and rising sea levels. All of these outcomes could not only have potentially significant environmental impacts, but could also have huge implications for society, the global economy, and the way we run our business.
What is Tarmac doing to help tackle climate change?
Our climate change strategy takes a comprehensive approach to energy management and carbon footprint reduction. We have set long-term targets to reduce our energy and carbon emissions and explore renewable sources of energy.
As well as complying with all Government legislation, we focus on minimising the energy and carbon used in the materials, products and services we provide. We do this by helping customers to adopt a 'whole-life' approach to specification and design, and by promoting the energy-efficient properties of our products.
Tarmac is also proactively exploring ways to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions through the use of waste-derived fuels, renewable energy and investing in energy-efficient technologies.
Energy management
Finding ways to save energy is central to our sustainability strategy. We are doing this by focusing on developing energy saving solutions, investing in modern plant and technology and focusing on the energy efficiency and in-use energy saving benefits that our product ranges deliver.
Greenhouse gas management
Our approach to reducing carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions includes:
- Improving energy efficiency
- Developing our waste-derived fuels programme
- Increasing our use of renewable energy
- Looking for carbon savings through transport and logistics
- Supporting the development carbon capture and storage technologies
Did you know?
- Tarmac Limited's energy consumption is 17% lower than in 2009.
- Tarmac's overall carbon footprint as well as direct (CO2e) emissions fell by 21.6% in 2009 from 2008.
- Tarmac Limited had 450,000 tonnes reduction in (CO2e) emissions in 2009 compared to 2008.
- At our Buxton Tunstead cement kiln, 44% of energy came from waste-derived fuels.
- Also at Tarmac Tunstead cement plant, 28800 tonnes of fossil fuel was saved in 2009.
