Tarmac sources of greenhouse gases
When it comes to managing our greenhouse gas emissions, we take into account both direct and indirect sources.
We categorise our greenhouse gas emissions into ‘direct’ and ‘indirect’ sources, in line with The Greenhouse Gas Protocol, the most widely used international accounting tool for government and business leaders. The categories are outlined in the table below.
Direct emissions – Scope 1
What are Scope 1 emissions?
Carbon dioxide (CO2e) emissions that arise from the use of fuels in our operational processes
Fuel combustion
to provide heat
Fuel used by
on-site transport
Chemical reactions
in production
processes
Fuel for marine
dredging
Indirect emissions – Scope 2
What are Scope 2 emissions?
Carbon dioxide (CO2e) emissions that arise from the generation of the electricity we use
Electricity purchased
for own use
Indirect emissions – Scope 3
What are Scope 3 emissions?
Carbon dioxide (CO2e) emissions that arise from other business-related activities
Delivery of
goods/services
Supply chain
Landfill
