Climate change
Rising greenhouse gas emissions may have significant impacts for society and the environment unless we all take action. Tarmac, and the wider construction industry, plays a crucial role in tackling climate change by reducing its impacts, and helping the UK meet Government emissions targets. Our comprehensive whole-life approach identifies and manages climate change impacts across our entire business - from extracting minerals, manufacture and transportation of products through to their in-use carbon performance and end-of-life disposal.
Why does it matter?
Climate change is an important global issue because scientists predict more extreme weather conditions, together with increased risk of flooding and rising sea levels, as a result of higher global temperatures. Climate change impacts – social, economic and environmental – are likely to affect our day-to-day lives and business operations. Tarmac, and the wider construction industry, can play a crucial part in cutting the UK’s carbon emissions, meeting Government targets and addressing climate change.

What is Tarmac doing?
We have set demanding targets to improve our energy efficiency and cut CO2 emissions. These targets drive our carbon management plan so that we develop our business, our processes and our products in a way that helps us – and our customers – to mitigate climate change and deliver on our sustainability goals.
Our approach involves using waste-derived fuels and renewable energy, introducing energy-efficiency programmes, innovating more durable, low carbon products, using alternative transport and focusing on recycling and recycled products. This comprehensive approach also includes providing tools to help our customers, suppliers and employees respond to climate change and reduce their own carbon footprints.
