Coloured tarmac: What is Mastertint?
Mastertint is our coloured tarmac range that can be both beautiful and practical. Mastertint is perfect for smooth surfaces as it is a material that is resistance to wear and tear. It can be laid by Tarmac National Contracting teams or by Tarmac approved contractors.
What is Mastertint made up of?
Mastertint replaces the surface course of a pavement construction. It has all of the structural qualities of the surface course but in colour. It is not a coating or another layer that will wear or flake off. See more technical details in How to specify Mastertint.
Mastertint uses an innovative, clear synthetic binder, offering the functional qualities of conventional asphalt in a range of attractive colours and surface textures. We use a clear synthetic binder because of its interlocking aggregate skeleton structure. Mastertint comes in a range of 6mm, 10mm and 14mm surface courses manufactured using Shell's Mexphalte C, a clear synthetic hydro-carbon resin binder. The innovative clear binder is also known as Mexphalte C. See more information on Mexphalte on the Shell website (new window).
How do Mastertint's colours differ?
Mastertint buff is a golden gravel aggregate coated with a clear binder. Mastertint also comes in red, green or blue aggregate coated with a complementary pigmented clear binder. See more in Mastertint colours.
