Tarmac's Swanworth site achieves BSi accreditation
Swanworth quarry in Dorset is flying high, after becoming the first Tarmac Recycling unit to earn the British Standards Institute (BSi) accreditation.
"This represents a real achievement for the local team and the company, and we're proud to be leading the way," said Phil Ryan, Tarmac's area quality manager for the south west. "BSi registration confirms that Swanworth's recycling operations are conducted in a responsible way, using the most stringent processes and procedures outlined in the WRAP protocol."
He adds: "The result is that we are able to offer a quality-managed product that can be used with confidence and which helps to reduce the industry's reliance on primary aggregates."
The accreditation is a first, significant step to achieving Tarmac Recycling's business objective of BSi quality registration for all operations by the end of 2008. A second south west site, Newhaven, has also been recommended for registration, and others are in the pipeline.
Swanworth, located on the Dorset coast near Swanage, recycles waste from construction and demolition work as well as foundry slag. This is turned into sub-base for roads. This year, the quarry will crush some 12,000 tonnes of material - the equivalent weight of 1,000 double-decker buses.
To gain BSi registration, Swanworth had to demonstrate strong management systems for its recycling operation. "We put a lot of hard work into our on-site training," explained quarry manager Derek Haden. "But it's paid off: this is a great result for everyone here at Swanworth and the environment in general."
