Tarmac secures £40 Million Leicestershire Alliance Contract

Tarmac has been awarded an innovative long-term highways maintenance and improvement contract by Leicestershire County Council, valued at up to £8 million per annum.

The pioneering 'Leicestershire Highway Works Alliance' agreement will see Tarmac's National Contracting division working in partnership with Leicestershire Highways - the Council's in-house highways services provider- to deliver a first class service to Leicestershire on all aspects of highway works.

Tarmac's proven experience of working with clients on similar strategic contracts, as well as their commitment to safety, quality and delivery, were key factors in securing the contract, with the tenders assessed on a quality and financial criteria.

The agreement will start at the beginning of January 2008 and run until March 2013, with the option for a three-year extension. The Alliance team is tasked with achieving over half a million pounds worth of efficiency savings between now and 2010 through integrated working, best practice sharing and re-engineering of delivery processes.

The Alliance will draw upon Tarmac's extensive resources and expertise, including the supply of bituminous and concrete materials, surfacing and planing services, and recycling capabilities, in addition to the provision of traffic management systems, safety fencing and street lighting.

Paul Fleetham, Tarmac National Contracting managing director said: "This is the latest in a string of major contract wins for Tarmac. It reflects our strong track record of working in partnership with councils and local authorities to successfully deliver strategic, long-term contracts on significant highways networks.

"Our unique position, as the contractor on two additional framework agreements in adjacent areas - Nottinghamshire County Council, the Highways Agency's Midlands Framework 3 and now Leicestershire County Council - will enable us to unlock efficiency savings and provide best-in-industry services across the East Midlands region."

Nicholas Rushton, deputy leader of Leicestershire County Council with responsibility for Highways and Transportation commented: "We are confident in Tarmac's ability to deliver quality work, on time and within budget, and look forward to working with the firm's highly experienced and committed team."

The Leicestershire Highway Works Alliance covers seven district council areas, including the towns of Loughborough and Melton Mowbray to the north, Market Harborough to the south east and Hinckley and Ashby-de-la Zouch to the west.

It is a partnering contract, based on the ECC Target Cost form of Contract, designed to encourage innovation and efficiency savings by sharing resources and best practice, and developing multi-disciplined, integrated teams.
