Tarmac to deliver £11 million Repair and Maintenance contract for Birmingham

Birmingham City Council has selected Tarmac to deliver a key two-year carriageway maintenance and repair contract worth around £5.5m per annum.

The agreement will see Tarmac's National Contracting division - the UK's leading highway surfacing and contracting firm - working closely with the Council to provide cost-effective, sustainable solutions to the city. The use of recycled materials will be considered wherever possible, combined with new products developed by Tarmac's in house technical centre, to deliver sustainable solutions.

Birmingham is the biggest local authority in the West Midlands, with a strong requirement for resurfacing and reconstruction works on their extensive urban highways network. Eddie Fellows, Assistant Network Manager at Birmingham City Council said: "Tarmac's competitive tender was found to be the best on both price and quality. We are pleased that Tarmac have won this contract and we are confident in the ability of their highly experienced and committed team to deliver quality work, on time and within budget.

He added: "Together with Tarmac, we are keen to promote a joined-up approach to working which will enable us to provide an industry-leading carriageway maintenance service for Birmingham."

Tarmac's team will be led by Mike Elford, contract director for the Midlands. Mike commented: "This contract will form an important part of the highways maintenance programme for Birmingham. Tarmac has unrivalled experience in managing contracts like this, and we are particularly interested in working together to deliver environmental benefits as well as cost savings. We have enjoyed a positive working relationship with Birmingham in the past, and look forward to developing this further over the coming years through the new contract."

Previously Tarmac has worked with Birmingham City Council on a number of surfacing schemes within the region. Tarmac is currently the contractor in the neighbouring West Midlands local authorities of Coventry, Wolverhampton, Warwickshire, Walsall and Sandwell, as well as on the Highways Agency's Midlands Framework 3.

The contract will start at the beginning of January 2008 and run until December 2009, with the option for a one-year extension.
