Restoration after quarrying

Butterfly

The site will be restored to a mix of pasture, nature conservation and ‘quiet recreation’. Fishing comes into this category. The worked area will become a lake. We are planting trees and vegetation, around the margins. This becomes a habitat for a variety of wildlife, birds, plants and mammals.

Restoration after Quarrying - planting of trees on site

Extraction of the sand and gravel deposits results in quarry areas naturally filling with water.

With ecological expertise these wet areas become precious habitats for wildlife.

Nosterfield Nature Reserve was formerly a sand and gravel quarry. Now it is a habitat for over 200 species of bird, including 32 different types of wader, 200 species of plants and insects and 20 different types of butterfly.

In areas of our present quarry where extraction is complete, we are planting and shaping the water edges to be a habitat for birds and other animals.

Walkers and birdwatchers are welcome to use the footpaths and viewing points that we have provided. There is a free car park at the quarry entrance off the B6267 next to our visitor centre, where there is a public toilet. The visitor centre is open, free, all year round.
