Langwith House Farm extension
A planning application for a northern extension of Nosterfield quarry has been submitted by Tarmac Limited to North Yorkshire County Council, following consultation by the company with local residents and parish councillors.
The extension, on land at Langwith House Farm, is required to ensure the long-term supply of the quarry’s high quality sand and gravel, which is used in the construction of homes, schools, hospitals and roads.
Nosterfield supplies about one fifth of the county's sand and gravel and its strategic location close to the A1 ensures that lorry traffic to and from the quarry uses a dedicated route along the B6267 which does not pass through any villages.
Tarmac is seeking permission to extract two million tonnes of sand and gravel over a five to six year period from 2014, after the existing reserves at Ladybridge Farm have been worked.
Ahead of submission of its planning application, the company guaged the view of local people with a public exhibition in the village hall in Well attended by over 85 people.
In line with the existing programme of award winning restoration the site will be carefully restored to a lake with a mixture of surrounding agricultural land, woodland and open countryside. New footpaths will be laid so that the surroundings can be enjoyed by all.
As well as providing a new public footpath at Langwith Hall Farm, Tarmac intends to facilitate full public access to the central and southern henges on Thornborough Moor, the part of the ancient monument that it owns, and in the long term seek to work with an appropriate partner to ensure in perpetuity stewardship, protection and public access of the monuments. Extensive archaeological surveys and trench excavations have been undertaken at Langwith Hall Farm and very little archaeological material of any date has been found.
North Yorkshire County Council will undertake a series of consultations with interested parties and local residents before a decision is made on the application. The full planning application will be available for view on their website.
