Problem pavements

Back

What’s the problem with pavements?

Potholes, cracking and deformation of pavement surfaces cause a big problem for local authorities, highways agencies and private contractors responsible for their up-keep.

Our network of roads and pavements were simply not designed to withstand the pressures of the increased volumes and traffic demands that they are subjected to. Over the last 100 years roads and pavements have evolved and comprise a range of materials which include traditional macadams, hot rolled asphalt and concrete.

The cost implications of ripping up the road and starting from scratch is often too great to contemplate. Not to mention having to deal with the traffic that would be diverted, putting additional pressure on our over stretched road networks.

Our solution

At Tarmac, we have developed Masterlayer. A tough asphalt that utilises stronger, more flexible materials to provide enhanced resistance to pavement cracking and deformation. No two roads are exactly the same. Demands on the surface vary and therefore requirements are different. For this reason, our experts assess and diagnose every project, before recommending a bespoke solution.

Masterlayer case studies

Oxford Street, Regent Street and Oxford Circus resurfacing
This area of London is subject to a high volume of heavy, slow moving traffic, which has caused considerable deformation to the existing road surface. The solution, a binder and surface course that is long lasting and reduces rutting.

West Molesey housing estate, Surrey
Two roads on West Molesley housing estate, Surrey needed resurfacing as, despite numerous patching repairs, they had severely deteriorated. The solution, a flexible asphalt surface that would resist cracking.

Willford Road, Ruddington, Nottinghamshire
A busy residential street  had come to the end of its life due to general wear and tear. The surface needed to be strong to cope with constant traffic. The solution, 20mm Masterlayer single course at a nominal depth of 80mm, which was not only structurally sound but provided cost saving benefits.

Coventry City Council, carriageway resurfacing
Coventry CC raised concerns they had relating to removing asphalt above stone sets and the relaying of a suitable product that could offset cracking caused by subsequent movement. The solution, a 20mm base/binder course were laid in a 100mm layer followed by a 30mm layer of 10mm Masterflex surface course.

Masterlayer for problem pavements - the benefits

  • Enhanced resistance to reflective cracking and pavement deformation

  • No need for full depth reconstruction

  • Faster construction time and less disruption to the road user

  • Thinner pavement design

  • Utilises stronger and more flexible materials which enhance structural benefits

  • Low voids reducing potential water damage and improved durability

  • Alternative to geo-textiles materials
