Durnford quarry

Restoration

It will take about 10 years to work the remaining reserves at the quarry, after which mineral extraction will cease. On completion of restoration, the ownership will transfer and become part of the adjacent Ashton Court Estate.

As can be seen from the montage below, the currently approved restoration scheme envisages a minimal, low level restored deep void with steep sided slopes, with ponds in the base.

Revised proposals

For some time, Tarmac and officers from Ashton Court Estate have been discussing the management and practicalities of this landform and the potential health and safety issues associated with public access to the site. The Estate is keen to inherit a landform which is in-keeping with the estate and maximises the potential for beneficial afteruse to the local community and visitors. The current preference is for a higher level restoration scheme as shown in the concept montage below.

Proposed restoration scheme

Proposed scheme

Take a look at our flythrough (below) to show you what our proposed restoration scheme will look like.

How will this be achieved?

This proposed scheme will be achieved through the use of locally sourced inert restoration materials from ground and site development works such as clays and sub-soils, together with the residual materials from the aggregate recycling operations (for example, the very fine material resulting from the crushing of concrete, brick, ceramics, tiles etc). The site will be operated in accordance with a detailed planning permission and environmental permit, which will secure appropriate and rigorous environmental controls on the operations. It is envisaged that the restoration will be undertaken concurrently with the production of primary aggregates, although the restoration works will continue for a further 10 year period after completion of mineral extraction.

Timescale

Based on current estimates it is anticipated that the proposed restored landform will be achieved by circa 2032. Clearly land use requirements may change over this period of time, however Tarmac, TCRA and Ashton Court Estate are keen to secure the views of the local community as to the potential after uses of the site.
