Climate change part of Tarmac's sustainability framework

Climate change

Climate change is a concern for the whole of society.  As a major organisation, Tarmac is playing an active part in tackling the issue holistically, by managing our own carbon footprint; by developing lower-carbon, energy-efficient solutions and sustainable products; and by helping our customers, supply chain and employees do the same.

Energy management

Proactively improving our energy efficiency

Greenhouse gas management

Reducing the use of fossil fuels

Complying with greenhouse gas legislation

Adapting to climate change

Proactively reducing emissions of carbon dioxide

Energy efficiency

Tarmac can have most direct influence by minimising the energy and carbon used in the materials, products and services we provide, and by helping customers to adopt a longer-term, ‘whole-life’ approach to specification and design. To achieve these goals, Tarmac is:

working with suppliers to encourage reductions in the carbon dioxide associated with the goods and services we purchase as part of our responsible sourcing agenda

committed to proactively improving our energy efficiency and reducing our greenhouse gas emissions through a management programme, which includes using waste derived fuels and renewable energy

collaborating with customers and providing information to help them identify the best whole-life option

investing in energy-efficient technologies by ensuring that energy and carbon efficiency are considered as part of our investment decisions.

Tarmac is well on the way to achieving its energy target.

In 2008, the specific energy consumption (SEC) of our business was 10.8 per cent lower than the 2004 baseline against a target of 15 per cent by 2014.

Total energy consumption has fallen 2.2 per cent compared to 2007, due to increased energy-efficiency measures, a decline in market demand and the balance of divestments and acquisitions.

Significantly higher production output since 2004 means our total energy consumption in 2008 was 8.6 per cent higher compared to 2004. The increase has been greatly mitigated by our energy-efficiency improvements.

Energy and greenhouse gas management

In addition to energy efficiency, Tarmac is taking action to reduce its direct greenhouse gas emissions, as well as helping customers to do the same. This includes working with them to:

provide an accurate understanding of the whole-life carbon footprints of our products and services

use our products in the most efficient way, with the aim of bringing significant reductions in carbon emissions.
