Urban heat island
Want to save 30-50% on your energy bills?
Mastertint coloured tarmac light reflective blend can do just that
Mastertint on a road surface will reduce the amount of energy required to light the surrounding area. It also helps dark objects stand out, leading to improved safety for pedestrians and cars. In tunnels, the savings are even more significant - typically we can help clients achieve those savings of 30-50% in energy bills by quite literally turning down the dimmer switch.
How is it delivered?
A surface that reflects light is also cooler in sunlight. This helps Mastertint contribute to a phenomenon known as the Urban Heat Island effect. An urban heat island is a metropolitan area which is significantly warmer than its surrounding rural areas. This leads to increased energy usage for cooling - a vicious cycle. Mitigation of the urban heat island effect can be accomplished through the use of lighter-coloured surfaces such as Mastertint. One way to measure this benefit is by measuring a materials’ Solar Reflectance Index (SRI). SRI represents, on a percentage scale, a material's temperature in the sun, with 0% being a dark colour that will be hottest, and 100% being a light colour that will be coolest. Mastertint can be designed with a very high SRI to remain cooler in the sun.
