Coastal environment: my options
What Tarmac products can I use in the coastal environment?
In the coastal environment whatever nature throws at you, your most demanding projects need products which will deliver the highest standard. For strength, speed, resilience and environmental consideration Tarmac will provide the perfect solution.
Why Toproc for coastal defences?
The early, high compressive strength of Toproc makes it one of the most suitable products when a concrete is required for a high abrasion environment, such as coastal defence. Toproc is particularly valuable in demanding applications where time is an issue and in aggressive environments, including under water.
Benefits of using Tarmac Toproc
- Early drying properties of this concrete means you can work within tidal time limits
- Early strength in terms of high durability, high strength and/or usable strength within 24 hours after placing to enable concrete to be in full use as quickly as possible.
- Impact and abrasion resisting concrete specifically designed for the most aggressive environments
- Toproc is four to five times long lasting compared to conventional concrete. This makes a huge difference in regular maintenance and reduces the overall lifetime cost
- BBA accreditation means you are getting the best concrete of its kind
Toproc at Blackpool sea defence
For over 100 years the old sea wall has provided Blackpool with protection from coastal erosion and flood alleviation. But constant bombardment from winter storms has taken its toll and much of the defensive structure now needs to be replaced. Tarmac Toproc high performance concrete was supplied, as the Cleveleys Coastal Defence Scheme required a concrete capable of withstanding the constant abrasion and scouring characteristic to the North Fylde coast.
Toproc early strength at Brighton marina
Tarmac were contacted to help maximize the abrasion resistance of the concrete to be used in the Brighton-Ovingdean Coast Protection Scheme. The beach shingle being thrown against the concrete structures during heavy storms causes this high level of abrasion damage. Tarmac proposed their Toproc Early Strength microsilica concrete. It is this high compressive strength that gives excellent abrasion resistance to resist damage. The long-term wear resistance of Toproc early strength concrete has been well proven in many high abrasion applications.

Toproc resisting washout at Weston-super-Mare seafront
Tarmac provided specialist ready-mixed concretes for the construction of the Weston-Super-Mare sea front enhancements in the inter-tidal zone. Birse Coastal needed to modernise the existing sea defences in Weston-super-Mare to bring them up to the recommended standard of protection against possible flooding. At the same time Birse needed to also upgrade the public spaces on the sea front. Tarmac supplied the concrete for this project which included 1200m3 of specialist Toproc under water applications microsilica concrete.
