Innovation at Scole Bypass, Norfolk
May Gurney (Norfolk Strategic Partnership), A140 Scole Bypass, Norfolk
Value: £3.2 million
Duration: 4 months
Completion: July 2010
Project Brief
Works involved a highly flexible 200mm asphalt overlay to 3.4 km of the A140 around Scole. The existing concrete pavement had suffered de-bonding of the continuous reinforcement, leading to extensive cracking that was allowing holes to form, concrete to work loose and water to penetrate the structure.
Background to the Contract
Since early 2004 the road had required regular lane closures for patching and repairs representing a long term maintenance problem for Norfolk County Council (NCC). Working closely with NCC, Tarmac’s team of technical experts provided highly specialised materials that will withstand movement and cracking of the underlying concrete carriageway and prevent further degradation through surface water ingress.
