Early strength concrete at waste station

Back

Alton waste transfer station using Toproc ESThe project was to construct a waste transfer station to process domestic waste. The floor area of the waste transfer station consisted of 6,800 m2 of nominally 175 mm deep concrete with a power float finish.  Approximately 75% of this floor area, consisting of the tipping halls and storage bays, had to achieve a maximum wear rate of 0.05mm (AR0.5) when assessed in accordance with BS8204-2: 2003, with no surface treatments or curing compounds, i.e. Special category. This wear rate was specified to ensure the concrete was resistant to abrasion and impact damage from front end loading machines.

Tarmac's solution

Toproc Early Strength microilica concrete, containing steel fibres to be utilised to cast the floor area of the tipping hall and storage bays to achieve an abrasion and impact resisting wearing surface complying with BS8204-2: 2003 - AR0.5 (Special). Toproc ES is one of a range of 14 end use specific formulations of microsilica concrete with a typical 24-hour strength in the range of 30 to 40N/mm2 and a typical 28-day strength ranging from 70 to 90N/mm2. It is this high compressive strength that gives excellent abrasion resistance to resist damage from front-end loading machines.  The long-term wear resistance of Toproc ES has been proven in waste transfer station applications.
