Toproc, Topforce and Toptint at Blackpool sea defence

• Blackpool’s biggest ever civil engineering project involved the replacement and reconstruction of 3.2 km of promenade and sea defence walls.
• Constant bombardment from winter storms for over 100 years had taken its toll on the sea wall and a 5 year project was undertaken to rebuild both the sea walls and the promenade.
• Tarmac worked very closely with Blackpool Borough Council and Birse Coastal to provide a variety of concretes that satisfied many operational requirements.

Tarmac's solution

The contract was both architecturally and aesthetically demanding and required precision working within the narrow tidal windows available. A working window of just six to eight hours a day meant Tarmac had to consistently deliver the right quality at the right time. A dedicated batching plant and expert technical support helped it pull off the feat.

Overall Tarmac supplied over 45,600m³ of concrete, 27,600m³ of Topforce reinforced concrete, 24,000m³ of Toptint coloured concrete and 6,700m³ of Toproc high performance concrete to the project.
