A bit about your role

I am a quantity surveyor for Tarmac National Contracting responsible for dealing with a wide variety of clients from major civil engineering contractors to local authorities, managing their contracts from pre start to the final account stage.
I get involved in a wide range of activities from producing accounts to a tight monthly schedule, ensuring we are paid correctly and in a timely fashion, attending pre start and progress meetings with clients to advising the site based teams.

Key stages in your career at Tarmac

I joined Tarmac as a graduate trainee. In my first year with the company I spent time moving around the various disciplines within national contracting which included site supervision, estimating and quantity surveying. After my initial training period, I took up the roll of an assistant quantity surveyor. During my time in this roll I was able to work on high profile contracts such as the Liverpool John Lennon Airport upgrade scheme.

In 2008 I took on the roll of quantity surveyor, looking after my own contracts working under a managing surveyor. Since I’ve been in this roll I’ve had to deal with a wide range of contracts including term maintenances and major spot tenders ranging from £50k to £2 million in value.

Qualifications/Experience that has helped you

In the 5 years since joining Tarmac I have been able to further my education having completed my ONC in civil engineering and my HNC in building studies I am now studying for my degree in quantity surveying at Salford University.
