Tarmac meet the people Clare

Name: Clare

Current role: Marketing Project Manager

Current location: Ettingshall, Wolverhampton

Joined as: Post room assistant

When: 1996

Why Tarmac

At the time I joined Tarmac I was unemployed and in need of a job. I applied for a job with Tarmac and got it! Initially the role was to work in the post room, but within a week I was asked to train in all areas of administration to cover the department’s holiday.

I managed to secure a permenant position with the administration department until a secondment opportunity arose in the marketing department,

I have now worked in all the areas of marketing from a promotions officer to my current role of marketing project manager. I have even been on a secondment role as the brand manager for Tarmac!

Since joining Tarmac in 1996 I have been given opportunities to progress in all of the roles I have carried out. I have been enrolled in college and university courses and have been mentored every step of the way through all of the line managers I have worked for.  For these reasons Tarmac has been a great place for me to work to progress my career. I am happy I made the change and applied for that position in the post room all those years ago.

A bit about your role

My current role means I have overall responsibility for the promotion of our specifier lead products which are our range of specialist products – TarmacDry, Mastertint, Toproc and Topforce.  I also work with and have responsibility for the promotional activity of our National Contracting business. I manage the budget allocated to these areas for their promotional activity throughout the year.

On a day to day basis I can be producing case studies of projects, new promotional brochures, DVD’s, organising photo shoots, attending exhibitions and conferences and manning the stands at these events to sell our products. My role involves working closely with our commercial teams and customers.

Qualifications/Experience that has helped you

I joined Tarmac with no business qualifications or experience. Tarmac sponsored me on various courses starting with the B-TEC National in Business and Finance for 2 years. I carried out all of these courses in my own time during the evenings and continued in my full time role.

Over the years in my various roles within Tarmac I have also been helped through my line managers by coaching me through situations and projects. This has been invaluable in my development. During my time I have also attended various internal courses and training days, such as sales negotiation training, first aid and health and safety courses.
