Tarmac Marine Dredging (TMD)
In 2008, United Marine Holdings (UMH), the company which included United Marine Aggregates (UMA) and United Marine Dredging (UMD) became wholly owned by Tarmac Limited. UMA was integrated into the Tarmac business during 2008 and as from 1st January 2010 UMD changed it's name to Tarmac Marine Dredging Limited, completing the transition.
Based in Chichester, a small team of marine operations, engineering and resources specialists manages our fleet of 4 dredgers which operate around the coast of England and Wales and are capable of landing over 4 million tonnes per year. Currently the dredgers deliver to 20 wharf locations, including 12 operated by Tarmac and 2 on the near Continent.

Dredging for Marine Aggregates
Dredging areas are held under licence from The Crown Estate, who own the seabed out to 12 nautical miles and the mineral rights to the limit of UK territorial waters. Crown Estate Licences are issued subject to the granting of a Statutory Dredging Permission obtained by the Company from the Government following a rigorous environmental assessment process.
Tarmac Marine Dredging currently has 20 dredging licence areas off the coast of England and Wales, licensed to extract over 6 million tonnes per year if required.
Marine aggregate extraction employs two types of dredging technique: anchor dredging, where a vessel anchors over a thick, localised deposit and trailer dredging, where the dredger trails its pipe along the seabed at speeds of up to 1.5 knots, suitable for more evenly distributed deposits.
Dredging is undertaken to a high degree of accuracy with reference to high resolution seismic data and seabed core samples. The dredger’s position and tracks are displayed in real time together with geological and licence boundaries on the ship's navigation computer to ensure that only the best quality resources are dredged. The vessels activity is constantly recorded by a Crown Estate Electronic Monitoring System linked to the ships navigation system and dredge gear sensors. This records when and where the ship is dredging to ensure compliance with licence conditions.
