Tarmac Aggregates

Tarmac AggregatesTarmac is the UK’s largest supplier of aggregates with a network of more than 100 quarries and 40 recycling units across the country supported by operations in marine dredging and secondary aggregates.

Our range of Aggregates

Tarmac is able to offer an unrivalled range of primary aggregates that include crushed rock, sand and gravel materials from a wide range of geological sources.

Our operations span the globe, supplying crushed rock, sand and gravel, armour stone, horticultural sand, slag products, agricultural lime and rail ballast. These are just some of the aggregate types quarries and processed by Tarmac within the UK.

Recycled aggregates

Tarmac’s national recycling network forms an integral part of the company’s aggregate supply capability. Through the quality controlled re-processing of materials such as clean concrete, road planings, rail ballast, construction and demolition waste and brick, Tarmac offers a wide range of recycled materials including Type 1 aggregates, BBA HAUC approved cold lay base / binder course asphalts, self-compacting foamed concretes as well as hydraulically bound pathway materials and blended soil products.

Blastfurnace slag

Tarmac has the sole UK licence for the processing of blastfurnace slag from Corus steelworks on the east coast of England and in south Wales and is able to supply products exempt from the Aggregates Levy by road or sea throughout the UK.

Tarmac also uses significant amounts of slag in the manufacture of a range of construction materials including asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and precast concrete products.

Slag products offer significant advantages in terms of economy, versatility, ease of use, yield and bond whilst also having exceptional safety benefits including fire resistance and frictional properties.

In addition to the manufacture of construction materials processed slag in various forms is ideal for a wide variety of applications outside the construction industry such as agriculture, water treatment, glass making and insulation products.

Tarmac Marine Dredging (TMD)

Tarmac Marine Dredging (TMD) operates the most modern fleet in the UK marine aggregates industry with four ships providing a total capacity of over four million tonnes a year. Each is equipped with the latest dredging and discharge equipment and utilises satellite-guided technology, accurate to within five metres, to achieve precise location of resources.

TMD is licensed to dredge within the Thames estuary, across the south coasts of England and Wales and up into the Bristol Channel.

In addition, Tarmac is part of a joint venture company operating in the Mersey.

TMD distributes aggregate materials to UK customers by road, rail and barge and also supplies a number of customers on the continent. See more on TMD
