Biodiversity

Biodiversity at TarmacTarmac has a long-standing commitment to protecting and enhancing biodiversity in and around our sites and as the UK’s largest quarrying company that’s a lot of land to manage - 15,470 hectares across the country.

In 2009, we became the first quarrying company to have Biodiversity Action Plans (BAPs) in place at 100% of our active UK quarries which was quite an achievement.Protecting the natural environment is a longstanding responsibility that we take very seriously, and BAPs provide a framework for us to manage and protect biodiversity in a measurable and transparent way. BAPs guide the way we work throughout the lifecycle of our operations, and often form a key part of a quarry’s restoration programme.Great crested newts

We work with independent ecologists and environmental experts to plan BAPs for each of our sites which often link with regional and county BAPs. Our BAPs take account of local, national and international strategies, including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (UCN) Red List of Threatened Species. Across our sites we have identified 83 Red List species and 33 UK priority species which we continue to protect through our BAPs.
