Tarmac has Flooring covered in Newport Redevelopment plans
Bespoke concrete hollowcore flooring units from Tarmac Topfloor are being installed in a new seven-storey, 1,000-space car park that is part of a £20 million project to refurbish the Kingsway Shopping Centre in Newport, Gwent. The development is a key phase of extensive plans to transform Newport city centre.
Tarmac Topfloor, the leading concrete flooring and stairs specialist, is supplying around 20,000 m2 of hollowcore units for the car park as part of a contract with HBG Construction worth over £1m. The flooring includes units measuring 320mm and 400mm in depth, with spans of 14 and 15 metres.
Tarmac’s concrete hollowcore flooring units, produced at the company’s Western Underwood site, are ideal for car parks since they can be manufactured with a span of up to 17.5 metres and have high quality soffits which require no additional preparation. Because the units have a flat surface and can span long distances without the need to prop with additional columns, there is minimal shadowing, which helps maximise light and improve security of the car park.
Working closely with HGB, Tarmac will co-ordinate delivery of the hollowcore units over a six-month period, which is expected to commence in September 2007. The Topfloor team will also be on hand to provide technical advice and guidance during the installation process.
Neil Taynton, senior project surveyor, HBG Construction Ltd said: “During the selection process for this package we were already aware of Tarmac Topfloor’s
capabilities and previous experience. We look forward to their expertise on what is a key package for this project. In particular, the timing of deliveries is critical for the smooth running of the concrete frame programme’.
The new car park is expected to be completed in summer 2008.
