Termodeck proving its worth
Tarmac has joined forces once again with leading UK property developer, Willmott Dixon, to work on the sixth successful installation of TermoDeck, Tarmac’s innovative heating, cooling and ventilation system, at the University of East Anglia (UEA).
TermoDeck was first used in the Elizabeth Fry Building at the UEA – listed as one of Europe’s most energy-efficient structures - and will now be included in an extension project at one of the University’s existing buildings the Nursing and Midwifery Unit (NAM).. Tarmac and Willmott Dixon are also working together on a TermoDeck installation at a new sixth-form centre in Haringey, North London.
TermoDeck is a heating, cooling and fresh-air ventilation system that uses the high thermal mass properties of concrete hollowcore panels. The fresh air is passed through the concrete panels at low velocities, allowing prolonged contact between the air and the concrete. This enables the slabs to behave as passive heat exchange elements that release heat to, or absorb heat from, the air in the slabs, (depending if heating or cooling is required). The warm or cooled fresh air is then distributed around the building via a network of vents.
Martyn Newton, assistant director of estates at UEA confirms TermoDeck is proving to be a great success across the campus. He said: “We are committed to providing low energy efficient buildings and are really pleased to support this energy saving concept. TermoDeck will continue to be our number one sustainable heating and ventilating choice.”
Stewart Brundell, operations director at Willmott Dixon said, "We are delighted with the NAM unit and have enjoyed working with the professional team from TermoDeck. This successful partnership is now continuing at our project to build the Sixth Form Centre at Haringey, which will be a major new education facility in North London when it opens in September.”
Craig Marshall, Tarmac’s senior design engineer for TermoDeck, said: “The NAM project and the Sixth Form Centre at Haringey shows how effective and productive our partnership is with Willmott Dixon and we are delighted to be working with them again.”
