10th August 2006 - TARMAC AND MORWEST MASTERMIND BIGGEST CONCRETE POUR
As part of a major scale construction project for Corus, Tarmac and Norwest Holst have just completed the biggest concrete pour to date, laying 926m3 of concrete, all in one continuous pour.
The concrete, which is being laid to a depth of 3.5 metres, is being used to create the foundations for an extension to the existing Corus Construction and Industrial plant at Scunthorpe. The new area will house a new state-of-the-art continuous casting plant.
Since starting the project in November 2005, Tarmac has provided Norwest Holst with more than 8,000m3 of concrete. For the final stage of the foundation works, Tarmac delivered a massive 926m3 of concrete to be laid in a single pour.
Tarmac used its nearby concrete plant at Woodhouse Road together with a dedicated onsite concrete production facility in order to produce the required volume of concrete. Together, these plants will meet the demands of the entire project. Roger Perry, operations manager, Tarmac Ltd, explains:
"Setting up a production facility onsite means we can deliver just the right amount of ready-to-use concrete to the right place at the right time."
The scale and complexity of the project requires particularly tight management as Andres Giannetti, Norwest Holst's project manager, explainS:
"The project involves linking the new casting area to the existing plant and this brings particular constraints. By working closely with Tarmac we have been able to develop a flexible programme of works that ensures reliable deliveries of ready-to-use concrete when needed."
In the next phase of construction, Tarmac and Norwest Holst will be constructing the concrete facing to the contiguous pile walls for the casting plant and the civil work is due to complete by the end of August 2006.
