Tarmac inveils war memorial

19th December 2006 - TARMAC UNVEILS WAR MEMORIAL

Tarmac has unveiled a monument to RAF and Canadian Air Force personnel who lost their lives on training exercises during the Second World War, whilst stationed at RAF Milfield.

The memorial, situated at the Maelmin Heritage Trail in Milfield, includes the names of Canadian personnel who lost their lives who were only partly listed on a previous monument at the Borders Gliding Club. A comprehensive list of names was acquired from the Canadian War Museum to list all known dead from this station.

Mike Jones, Tarmac Northern estates manager said: "We were really keen to erect this memorial as a lasting memory to those who lost their lives."

The monument unveiling was attended by Sir John Willis, Air Chief Marshal (ret), Philip Deakin MBE, Brian Hurst vicar of Kirknewton (where the graves of many of the pilots lie), Anthony Murray Mayor of Berwick-upon-Tweed Borough, personnel from RAF Boulmer, Commander Plain (ret), Royal Navy Flying Corps, Dr. Clive Waddington of Archaeological Research Services Ltd and Newcastle University, Kristian L.R. Pedersen of Archaeological Research Services Ltd and Michael Young and Dave Phillips of Tarmac.
