Supporting local initiatives

Across the UK, we make a positive social and environmental contribution wherever we operate. Our projects include educational initiatives and environmental enhancement programmes.

Our actions

Outreach programmes

We provide ongoing support to Walsall Football Club’s educational outreach programme, aimed at children who have experienced difficulties with full-time schooling. This project gives children a positive classroom environment and both academic and pastoral support so that they flourish and are able to return to mainstream education or start a job.

Schools and education

As part of our schools programme, we offer site visits where children learn about safety near quarries, archaeology, the importance of quarries to our everyday lives, and the career opportunities that the industry presents. During these open days, children have the opportunity to find out what it’s like working at one of our quarries. We often team up with independent organisations such as archaeologists to teach children about the exciting finds we uncover, and what they tell us about our heritage, and wildlife groups, to educate about habitats and animals in and around our sites.

Sponsorship and match funding

Our sites and employees actively engage with local community groups. We believe that this is the right thing to do as it not only helps us foster long-term relationships between our company and our neighbours; it also means that employees can actively suggest ideas and develop within their role as a result.

At our Tunstead and Hindlow quarries in Buxton, we have supported a range of more than 50 local charities and other good causes. We have also offered match funding to employees who want to make individual contributions to charity. In 2011, we made donations to hospices, the emergency services and schools. In addition, we focused on other key areas that benefit the local community, such as sports teams, music, and performing arts and culture. Buxton Community School, the Buxton Mountain Rescue Team and Bakewell Arts Festival are just some of the organisations that enjoyed our financial support this year.
