Our strategy

Protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of employees, contractors and communities is at the heart of everything we do and is our key principle above anything else. We aim to create a fair, equitable environment where people are given the opportunity to develop and build their careers at Tarmac. Establishing good relationships with communities and stakeholders is also vital, as we depend upon our neighbours for the long-term success of our company.

Every employee can depend on a safe working environment, and local communities can have confidence in our community engagement plans, which are always tailored to the individual location.

Our approach is threefold:

Health and safety

The health, safety and wellbeing of our employees, contractors and everyone who comes into contact with our business is a key principle for Tarmac. Our commitment to this extends throughout the organisation, and our senior management help to develop a strong safety culture by demonstrating Visible Felt Leadership. We work in potentially hazardous environments, so it’s important that we run safe operations and that people understand how to go about their jobs in the safest way possible. Because of this, we promote a zero harm culture that targets continuous improvement and an ever-safer working environment. Our continued effort is beginning to show real results with an overall reduction in total recordable case frequencies and a reduction in the number of new occupational health cases reported during the period.

Our employees

Our long-term success depends on our ability to attract and retain a diverse and talented workforce. We do this by creating a fair, safe and supportive working culture, which enables people to realise their full potential through progression, training and development opportunities. We also work with our suppliers to ensure we have a safe, ethical and sustainable supply chain, and that we’re able to deliver the best products and services to meet our customers’ needs. We focus on:

  • diversity and inclusion
  • training and development
  • dialogue and support.

Stakeholder engagement

We are committed to developing open, honest and positive relationships with different groups. Maintaining these relationships is essential to our success as a sustainable company. Our key stakeholders include:

  • employees
  • customers
  • local communities
  • suppliers
  • shareholders
  • regulators and policy makers.
