Efficient use of natural resources
Our products are essential for social and economic wellbeing but we must meet this demand in as efficient and responsible a manner as possible to help maintain an adequate supply for future generations. Our approach focuses on responsibly managing the use of finite resources and reducing waste, while reusing and recycling materials wherever possible. We actively promote this philosophy to our customers.
Performance summary
- We recycled 91% of the waste we generated in 2011.
- We achieved a 95% reduction in waste sent to licensed disposal compared with our 2004 baseline.
- We produced 1.36 million tonnes of recycled aggregate from just over two million tonnes of construction, demolition and excavation waste.
- We used 44,600 tonnes of waste as fuels for cement production, including waste tyres, meat and bone meal, blended general waste and wood chips.
- We used 33% less water, per cubic metre of concrete, concrete products and mortar compared to our 2004 baseline.
Our targets
Our individual businesses are all committed to meeting targets for the efficient use of natural resources set by our parent company, Anglo American. Because we have already met and exceeded these targets, we’ve reviewed our performance and set ourselves even more ambitious targets, which are:
- to reduce waste sent to licensed landfill by 75% by 2012 (from a 2004 baseline)
- to reduce litres of mains water, per cubic metre of concrete, concrete products and mortar by 45% (from a 2004 baseline)
- to measure potable water and abstracted water consumption at all operational locations.
