Biodiversity
We protect and manage the species and wildlife at our sites. In 2010, nine quarries achieved The Wildlife Trusts' Biodiversity Benchmark and we have Biodiversity Action Plans at all our active quarries.

Restoration is a central part of the way we manage each quarry. We have restored 3,258 hectares of land between 2008 and 2010.

Recycling and reuse
Tarmac is one of the UK's leading recyclers and a net user of waste, which helps us to use resources efficiently and cut embodied CO2 by using recycled materials to make our products. We have cut the amount of waste we sent to licensed disposal by 92% since 2004.

Reducing CO2 emissions is a key priority for Tarmac. We have cut specific CO2 emissions by 11% since 2004.

Waste-derived fuels
We are committed to cutting our reliance of fossil fuels, while reducing CO2 emissions and re-using waste materials from other industries, In 2010, 32% of the fuel for our Tunstead cement plant was waste-derived, such as tyre chips.

Transport
Tarmac has the largest liveried fleet of vehicles in our industry, and we are committed to minimising any impacts by running them in a safe and environmentally responsible way. In 2010, our aggregates business increased the amount of material transported by rail by 150,000 tonnes.

All of Tarmac's products are responsibly sourced. We have BES 6001 Framework Standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products at VERY GOOD rating across our entire UK product range.
