Measuring carbon footprints

In 2011, we showed industry leadership as the first company in our sector to launch a comprehensive Carbon Footprint tool. As well as providing customers with the total carbon footprint of any Tarmac product from any of our UK sites, we also use an internal reporting tool to monitor progress across the company against our reduction targets.

Our actions

Carbon Footprint Calculator

Tarmac launched the industry’s first, comprehensive Carbon Footprint Calculator in 2011. It enables us to provide our customers with an accurate carbon footprint ‘quote’ for any product from any of our UK production sites. It gives a specific calculation from ‘cradle to gate’. This means we can offer transparent information to our clients and support then in selecting the right products to help achieve their carbon reduction goals. Tarmac’s Carbon Footprint Calculator complies with PAS 2050 standard methodology and asPECT, both recognised industry standards for calculating carbon footprints.

Carbon footprint of laying operations

In 2011, we began to work towards extending our Carbon Footprint Calculator to develop a way of measuring not only the carbon footprint of products, but also the carbon footprint of our on-site contract laying and long-term road maintenance services. We’ll be trialling this with our customers during 2012.

Carbon Trust Standard

We have a longstanding commitment to reducing energy use and cutting CO2 emissions, through our own efficiency programmes and by working with external partners like the Carbon Trust. In 2011, our UK business achieved the Carbon Trust Standard for our management and CO2 reduction performance over the past two years. We have delivered this reduction across all our UK operations.
