Energy efficiency
Effective energy management is critical to our business success. Our approach includes identifying energy-saving opportunities across our operations and products, and driving behaviour change through employee training. Ambitious energy-efficiency targets drive our investment in new technology and achieve significant cost savings.
We have made significant progress in this area: our total energy consumption in 2011 was 17% lower than our 2004 baseline. During 2011, we continued to implement our energy and CO2 management programmes, seeking to achieve even greater energy efficiency and cost savings.
Our approach is to invest in modern plant and technology and deliver against our continuous improvement energy-efficiency and reduction programmes. We work to improve and promote the whole-life energy performance of our products and materials, by highlighting their importance in managing the in-use energy and carbon from buildings and infrastructure, and minimising their embodied energy.
Performance summary
Total energy consumption
- 17% lower than the 2004 baseline
We achieved a major reduction in total energy consumption – compared to both the 2004 baseline and our 2010 performance – by continuing to implement our energy-efficiency programme. The current economic situation also contributed to reduced energy use this year.
Specific energy consumption (SEC)*
- We have reduced our SEC by 15% on 2004 baseline
The success of our business-wide energy-efficiency programmes has helped us to maintain our significant improvement in SEC performance.
Our targets
Tarmac has significantly exceeded the overall targets set by our parent company, Anglo American, so we have set ourselves an even more ambitious target.
Specific energy consumption* target
- 25% reduction by 2014 against 2004 baseline
* Specific energy consumption (SEC) is the energy used per unit of production.
