Tarmac's Report to Society - Safety
Weekly safety briefings
In March 2007, at the request of Tarmac's CEO, David Weston, weekly safety briefings were introduced across all our operational UK sites. Site managers are required to hold sessions every week for all employees and regular contractors. Some larger sites hold a number of separate briefings to cover the whole workforce.
These meetings have become a valued forum for dialogue on any issues related to safety. They provide an opportunity to discuss new initiatives, suggest improvements, analyse any near-misses and highlight any unsafe acts that may have been observed during the previous week. Feedback from management has been very positive and suggests this has become an established and productive forum to reinforce good safety practice.
The briefings not only ensure that employees fully understand the rules and their responsibilities to themselves and others, but also tie in with our ‘One’ campaign. Launched in 2007, this is based around the simple principle that one injury is one too many, and that all occupational injuries and illnesses are preventable. Supporting our Golden Rules, the ‘One’ campaign allows employees to show a red card (close up shown above) to stop those involved in an unsafe act - it emphasises our safety fundamentals and has created a highly visible method of preventing accidents before they happen.
