Tarmac's Report to Society - Safety
Tarmac Topfloor vehicle safety
Tarmac's Topfloor division, a leader in the design, supply and installation of precast concrete flooring and stairs, introduced two innovative safety systems in 2007 to protect employees against falls while unloading flatbed lorries.
The first is an airbag protection system, in which airbags are inflated and connected to the side of a vehicle. Part of the airbag can be temporarily removed to allow an empty vehicle to move out and another lorry to move in for unloading.
Developed by AirTek Ltd and trialled by the Precast Flooring Federation, this type of airbag protection is ideal for many unloading jobs. However, factors such as space, load weight and floor type also come into play and the Tarmac team realised that an alternative system was needed to combat fall risks in certain situations.
Tarmac Topfloor therefore began work with an engineering company on a system of trailer nets. This was trialled in 2006 and successfully introduced to the business in 2007. We hope to encourage further use of this system across the industry, and have been sharing information on the net system with customers and the Precast Flooring Federation. Work is also ongoing in 2008 on a new type of device to protect employees working on trailers.
