Local Tarmac employees dare to wear pink for breast cancer

Employees at Tarmac's Henlade concrete plant dared to wear pink for a day in aid of Breast Cancer Awareness.

While the lads played it safely, opting for pink ties or shirts, the ladies paraded their pink apparel in the form of pink pyjama bottoms, pink breast cancer relief t-shirts, legwarmers, cowboy hats and fairy tutus.

An office collection was made for the pink privilege; plus a certain number of pink marshmallows were put into a jar for a 'guess the number' competition costing £1 a go, and freshly baked 'pink' cakes also helped fetch in funds to the pink money pot.

A hearty £300 was raised on the day and Jenner Harrison, Safety, Health and Environment co-ordinator, who was the main organiser said: "This is something I've organised for a couple of years now, however this year we pushed the boat out with the fancy dress and marshmallow competition to try and raise even more money. The guys in the yard were very competitive when it came to the marsh mallows, some had 5 guesses each just to try and beat their mates and at £1 a guess we weren't saying no!

"It's a really good cause and over the years there have been some employees who have been affected by cancer, although not necessarily breast cancer. Looking to the future, due to the majority of the workforce being male, I have been in contact with Taunton Macmillan Cancer Support discussing the possibility of introducing a testicular cancer awareness day."
