A unique challenge ahead
Two fleet-footed quantity surveyors from Tarmac National Contracting are tackling the BUPA Great North Run for the second year in a row in aid of the charity, Unique.
Every day is a winding road for Peter McEwen and James Grey, quantity surveyors, from Birtley, County Durham. Just like this time last year, they are training intensively for the October's BUPA Great North Run, a 13.1 mile half marathon course between Newcastle and South Shields.
Peter explained: "We enjoyed doing the run last year, now we want to beat our times. We started training by doing a seven mile run every two days and have now progressed to a ten-miler every three days.
Also like last year, their efforts are in aid of Unique, which provides information and support for families and individuals affected by rare chromosome disorders.
Both men are keen runners and play football and hockey regularly. They had thought about taking part in a big event like the Great North Run. And then they heard about the charity.
"Neither of us have a personal connection with the charity or the people it helps. But we wanted to support it because it sounded so worthwhile," said Peter. "Unique receives no government support so it is heavily reliant on private donations and fund-raising."
Last time around the pair entered the run as part of a small group, which raised a total of £1,500. This year that group will consist of Peter, James, and some family and friends and they are aiming to beat last year's amount.
To start the ball rolling, Peter and James have set an initial target of £300 to achieve for the fund-raising but they are keen to encourage other people to support this worthy cause in order to raise as much as possible.
