Coventry's new concrete plant

Coventry's new Concrete plant

Coventry's new concrete plant opened its gates this month, bringing the prospect of more efficient service for customers in the city.

The plant, built alongside its 30-year-old predecessor, can store 400 tonnes of aggregate - five times as much as the old plant. It can also hold 180 tonnes of cementitious material, and has completely eliminated the need for ground storage.

Opening a new plant can be a complex process, often taking months of hard work and cooperation between teams across Tarmac. "It can be difficult to get the green light for a project," said Nigel Blackburn, production manager for Aggregate Products - Midlands. "We need to receive council permission, which can depend on how old the previous plant is, the facilities we have, and whether there's a local demand for our products."

The new plant will be able to produce 70 cubic metres of concrete an hour - compared with 42 for the old plant. It can also make specialist products such as Topflow HZ and Toproc. The plant requires one full time operator, with another coming in during busier shifts - but the new plant's benefits extend beyond production capacity.

"We have excellent traffic management on the new site, along with modern silo protection equipment which prevents any dust being released into the air," said Nigel. "Coventry's new plant will allow us to make some major steps forward."
