Borras Eco Centre awarded 80,000 pounds

The Eco Centre housed at Tarmac's Borras Quarry, Wrexham has just been awarded 80,000 pounds to continue its work with children and young adults with special needs.

The centre educates people on environmental issues linked with quarrying. With the grant from the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund the centre will be able to fund staff salaries for the next two years.

Project manager Jason Orme said: "It's great that our visitors will continue to have access to the Eco Centre. Without the grant we would have lost staff or even shut down."

Other attractions at the center include a recycling depot that is used by many local schools and the Spinning Web Cafe, which offers Fairtrade or home grown produce as well as internet access.

Walter Thomas, Tarmac's liaison officer said: "This is an excellent centre that benefits many people in the Wrexham area. Recently Tarmac, in their partnership with the Millennium Eco Centre, has donated materials for the woodland walk pathways and saplings for the progressive planting within the concept restoration plan. The quarry will eventually become a country park with extensive woodlands, wetland and open grasslands and will benefit the local community."

Decorative wall outside the Eco Centre was created as part of a European Link project with 5 schools.
