A trio of wins in the Midlands
Hard work and excellent customer service from a National Contracting team has paid off with three extensions to West Midlands surfacing contracts. An existing contract with Wolverhampton City Council has been extended by two years and a carriageway reconstruction and resurfacing contract with Coventry City Council gave rise to extended works on the A45.
Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council has also awarded a one-year extension on the previous two-year extension given in 2005. This contract is for the maintenance of the Walsall road network and predominantly involves resurfacing work. It guarantees work for the Midlands team, managed by Nick Angelou, well into 2008.
Principal engineer Gary Chalk at Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council works closely with Tarmac and supported the decision to extend the contract. He said: “We have an excellent relationship with Tarmac, which has gone from strength to strength over the course of the contract.”
Feedback cards handed out by the council and filled in by the public living near Tarmac sites backed up the positive impression.
Senior surfacing supervisor Paul Conlan has run the Walsall contract for five years, organising the site, health and safety programmes and day-to-day running. “It’s a partnership thing,” he said.
“Although it was tough at the beginning, we have gained the trust and respect of the client through good workmanship and reliability.
“There has always been the same team of people and it’s a real ’feel-good’ contract.”
